In my article, “Travel Insurance – How to Protect Your Vacation Investment,” I outlined some of the different types of coverage in travel insurance. Different travel insurance companies offer various combinations of the coverages that were mentioned, and your selection of the right coverage for you will depend on your personal situation and the type of vacation you are planning. Here are some things to consider:
1) How much in deposits or pre-payments would you lose if you had to cancel? How far in advance are you booking your trip? If it is a last minute purchase of a weekend trip, you may want to skip cancellation insurance and stick with medical coverage or no travel insurance at all. If you’ve got a lot of deposit money on the line for a trip over a month away, trip cancellation insurance is ideal for you.
2) Are you traveling to an international destination? Check your medical coverage and seriously consider supplementing it with travel medical coverage. Most importantly, check your description of coverage to ensure that the country you are traveling to is definitely covered by the policy.
