Asia Travel Insurance – Don’t Forget the Credit Card

When traveling to Asia everyone recommends that you have travel insurance when you come, this is especially true for Cambodia, Vietnam and Thailand. Trying to find the right travel insurance plan can be a daunting exercise, especially if you seek adventure in your holiday travel diet, like mountain trekking, parachuting, riding 50cc motorcycles, scuba diving, and traveling on small boats. Most holiday travel specific insurance plans will allow some limited adventure activities, like 14 days of scuba diving, but they put restrictions on it, and unless you are an expert, chances are good that you could end up in a loop hole, and be denied coverage.

In the US if you’re employed, and you have group insurance through work, the coverage will more often cover the high risk stuff that will not be covered by specialty travel insurance. The group work insurance companies can afford to do it, as the risk is spread over a much larger group, with more people in a class, and most will not be doing fun stuff! So keeping your regular insurance when traveling, if you can, is a good idea. Most employers, if you are on sabbatical, or just on a long vacation, will have a way for your insurance to continue if you pay the premiums. Talk to your human resources department about this, they love to talk about stuff like this. If you lose your job, you may also be able to continue the insurance under the Cobra laws, a very good thing for you to look at closely when you are telling the boss to stick it. Continue Reading

Travel Insurance For Senior Citizens Traveling Overseas

Many of us believe that if someone is sixty-five years or above in age, finding travel insurance for him will be next to impossible. This is not entirely true. There are many companies today that will insure the elderly and provide them the security that they well deserve. Some insurance companies even go to the extent of allowing travel insurance to those who have passed the prime and are well above seventy. The only thing to note is that these companies will calculate the premiums based on the high risks involved and medical treatment for the applicable age. This is something we will need to grant them since in reality the risks are high for the elderly.

Traveling to a foreign land can be fraught with unanticipated events and the need for a travel insurance policy becomes more exaggerated. The risks involved in international travel are generally higher than those for national travel and therefore the policies for international travel are customized to apply to the specific need. Those traveling to the European Economic Area would be well equipped with an E111 form. This from entitles the traveler to free or discounted cost for emergency medical attention. This form covers only those venturing out to the UK or the European nations. Some areas that offer free medical coverage and therefore the From E111 is superfluous and therefore dispensable if you are traveling only to such areas. Continue Reading

Travel Insurance – Positives and Negatives

If you are a glass-half-full type of person you may not give much thought to the things that could go wrong when you travel overseas on holiday. You may even believe that travel insurance is an unnecessary expense. Some people are so optimistic that they think someone else will pick up the pieces of their broken holiday and pay the bills for them if things go pear-shaped.

The glass-half-empty camp, however, are often more likely to be the worrywarts of the world, anticipating disaster and spending hours making sure they purchase the correct travel insurance. They check the policy document again and again to ensure that all planned activities are covered. They are often also the ones most likely to call the insurance company with additional questions – just to be sure – and why not! It is no good waiting until things go awry to start checking your policy document to find out whether you are covered for a specific incident or activity.

There is a saying that opposites attract, so in an ideal world a ‘half-full’ personality should pair up with a ‘half-empty’ – and everything would balance out so that they both have the safety net of travel insurance for their holidays! Continue Reading
